Derek grew up very alone, his parents weren't around often. His parents are very intelligent and quiet people, they like to keep to themselves and therefore Derek doesn't know much about either one. Because his parents were always away on business, they tried to show Derek that they truly loved him with gifts and letters. Both are ruthless and intelligent people that always seem to get what they want. Being alone, Derek grew up doing pretty much whatever he wanted. He was taught magic and basic school functions for the first ten years of his life before he was to attend Hogwarts. Turned out he is just as intelligent as his parents.
Because his parents weren't usually around, Derek spent most of his time with the house elf, Doreen...which was boring.

He liked to go out and sneak a peek at how muggles live. Thinking it all foolish and unnecessary, he can't even begin to imagine how they live without magic! Though that's how he found that his way of making friends is flirting around. Through his natural charisma (thanks mom!) and his persuasiveness (dad!) he can become friends with nearly everyone and is generally friendly towards all. Despite all this, Derek never really keeps anyone close, particularly after having some sort of sexual activity with them. He's quiet about his personal life and his home along with his own true thoughts about the world. He's quite secretive and very cunning. Or so he found out through his time at school and from sneaking out to the muggle world. Life at Hogwarts is a game as he's set for life and doesn't need to work with all the money his family has accumulated for centuries.
